Abstract:
Object of the invention:
A flat composite fabric comprising a flat fabric and wires which are
permanently incorporated therein and which are made of an alloy possessing
shape memory properties (memory fabric) and its application in the medicine,
aeronautic and space technology. A one of this application - massage device -
is especially suitable for the fitness aims at home.
Manufacturing of the flat composite fabric:
Memory-metal wires are incorporated between two flat layers of a conventional elastic fabric in a
sandwich configuration. This can be done by means of ultrasonic welding, for
example. The memory wires are bent in a meandering configuration by means of a
bending tool. These meanders are trained than to the two-way memory effect. The
composite memory fabric can be manufactured in the form of a continuous
dressing, bandage or sleeve. The transformation temperatures and the hysteresis width
are variable depend on the
alloy concentration such that the human body temperature lay under, within or
above the hysteresis loop. The ends of meandering wires are electrical contacts
and connected with an electrical current source.
Properties of the memory fabric:
The memory fabric is very soft at the room temperature and can be easy tensed.
At the heating through the human body or by means of a current impulse the
memory fabric contracts and press on the body. The compression
force and compression deformation of the memory fabric can be optimize (between
50% and 250% inelastic deformation) depend on the meander shape parameters.
Applications:

Passive compression bandages and support dressing:
At this application the transformation
temperature Ms is lower as the temperature on the human body surface
(Ms<Tb~30?C). If the Af < Tb too,
the bandage is heated through the body heat. If Ms<Tb, the
bandage can be heated by means a one current impulse. In the both case the
bandage made of the memory fabric contracts, remains in this state and exerts
the compression on the body.

Active massage devices as a gradient systems and pressure suits for pilots and astronauts:
These devices (cuffs, sleeve, pressure suits made of the memory fabric with As>Tb)
are provided for electrical contacts, power source and electronic control
device for generating current impulses such that the contraction of the memory
fabric takes place as a result of heating by means of time-controlled current
impulses. The relaxation of memory fabric takes place at the cooling up to the
body temperature during the current breaking. In this way continuously repeating
pressure waves can be produced.
